Established on 1993, this reserve includes the Northern part of the Upper Gulf, and some part of Puerto Peñasco and San Luis Rio Colorado counties in Sonora.
It also includes the Colorado River delta and in its marine portion, the region of the California Upper Gulf. The surface of this reserve is 934,756 has.
Reaching this magnificent natural sanctuary it's easy from United States, thanks to its closeness to the border, and is the ideal place to explore nature and enjoy all of the diversity that can be offered at the Sonora desert.
The objective of the reserve is to preserve the diversity and integrity of the plants and animals life in its natural environment, intended for its current and future use and exploitation.
On this area it is possible to find unique species that use this area to reproduce; also, this is a hibernation zone for migratory birds.
The ecotourism can be pleased with the opportunity of watching so many unique species together at once.
As a result of the presence of competitors and exotic predators fish like lobina and the common carpa, reptiles are highly diverse compared with other deserts, for instance, desert iguana, chameleon, and some lizards and snakes.
At least 80 species of terrestrial and aquatic birds live in this area, both resident and migratory birds; for example: fishing eagle, white and brown pelicans, sea-gulls, sea-swallows, ducks, geese, divers, and clapping.
The mammals group includes diverse rodents, such as field rats, squirrels and skunks. Some hunting appeal species are found here also, like the bura deer and the white tail deer. In addition, predator mammals are also present, such as foxes, coyotes and wild cats.
The species of marine mammals that have been registered are the marine vaquita (a large endangered fish), bottle-nose dolphin, common dolphin, pilot whales, baby whales, humpback whale, gray whale and sea lions.
Nearly 19% of all the types of plant life described in Mexico are included in this reserve. You can find marine vegetation, sandy desert dunes and the traditional sahuaro cactus plants.
