Native Groups in Sonora

Sonora Native Groups MapThe Sonora natives were divided in 9 tribes, 8 of them still populate the State and continue with their history and traditions.
The place where they used to live was constructed according to the temperature of the region; its towns and villages were founded at the margin of the rivers, favoring its agricultural workings.
They have a rich and varied culture, with extraordinary artistic manifestations, in where the effort of the man to dominate the nature is demonstrated.

Guarijios

Guarijios

Guarijios live in the Southeastern part of the state of Sonora at the side of the Sierra Madre Oriental, where the states of Chihuahua and Sonora are contiguous. They make crafts with natural materials like palm, clay, branches and fibers, which they weave.

Mayos

The mayo region is located in the northern part of Sinaloa and southern Sonora. Among the crafts they elaborate we can find: wool blankets, stick baskets, furniture, kitchen tools and wood masks.

Seris

Seris

Currently seris live in two places of the desert coast of Sonora: Desemboque which is located in Pitiquito’s municipality and Punta Chueca located in Hermosillo, near Kino Bay. The artisan work at this moment consists of iron wood carving, the weave of coritas and elaboration of necklaces.

Ópatas

Opatas

Opata literally means “enemies” they used to be called by their neighbors, the Pimas. Actually opatas are a tribe of Piman stock. Little is known about them, because their tribe extinguished more than a century ago.

Cucapa

Cucapa

Cucapa is one of the groups in risk of extinction in the state. This small population, lost of almost all their traditions (except death rituals) and their language, and had put themselves in disadvantage with other groups.

Kikapu

Kikapu

Kikapus were settled in Sonora since the mid-nineteenth century when they bought a common land from the government, where they live nowadays. Adjusted to the mestizos, Kikapus are in process of extinction as an ethnic group.
