"Only Sonora" moves south and it's easier to visit Sonora

he Government of the State of Sonora has made an agreement with the treasure department , to grant permits for the intern of vehicles for foreign citizens and for Mexicans living abroad, that enter in to the State by one of the 5 ports of entry in Sonora: San Luis Río Colorado, Gral. Plutarco Elías Calles (Sonoyta), Nogales, Naco and Agua Prieta; and by the port of Guaymas, Sonora.

If you travel to Guaymas, San Carlos, Hermosillo, Bahía de Kino, Magdalena, Santa Ana, etc.,  up to the Km. 98 at Empalme, YOU DO NOT RECQUIRE TO PERFORME YOUR VEHICLE IMPORT PROCEDURE, you should only bring with you the migratory form (FMT, FM2, FM3 o FME) granted by National Immigration Institute (INM). Does not matter if you have one or both nationalities.

The Free Circulation Zone covers from Agua Prieta by the federal highway No. 2 until Imuris; from there to the south, by the federal highway No. 15 until the 98 kilometer of Empalme; and from there trough all the coast line of the State until San Luis Río Colorado.


In the Km. 98 of Empalme, ends the free circulation zone for vehicles of foreign citizens and Mexicans living abroad; From this place it is necessary for all vehicles to have with a temporary import permit, to avoid having their vehicle impounded by the customs authorities.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE FREE CIRCULATION OF VEHICLES  

 

1.  When coming in to the country the vehicles must have current foreign license plates.

2.  Vehicles might be driven by the owner, his spouse, his ascendants or descendents or brothers as long as they are foreign or Mexicans living abroad. If driven by any other person the owner of the vehicle should come on board.  

3.  Bring with you only personal luggage, according to the trip.  

4.  Only the vehicles that weight over 60 thousand pounds (30 tones) such as trucks , as well as boats or others with the same characteristics, require a temporary import permit, procedure that must be performed trough a Customs Broker in the border city they will be entering by.
 

5.  Along with the main vehicle you can bring into the country up to 3 motorcycles and small boats, or up to equal the number of people riding on the main vehicle.  

6.  For personnel vehicles tow by motor homes, it is required for the owner to travel in the main vehicle.  

7.  Golf carts or similar can not be brought in because this do not have a serial number and are not registered in the Department  of  Motored Vehicles “DMV”.

When you return into the United States you can cancel your permit in the Banjercito modules located in: Nogales, Agua Prieta, San Emeterio y San Luis Rio Colorado.

PRESENT DOCUMENTS IN ORIGINAL AND COPY.

1.- OWNERSHIP TITLE, OF THE VEHICLE
(ORIGINAL TITLE, CURRENT REGISTRATION, BUY OR LEASING CONTRACT)

2.- DOCUMENTS THAT PROVE YOUR RESIDENCE IN ANOTHER COUNTRY (PASAPORT, BIRTH CERTIFICATE, FOREIGN CITIZENSHIP CERTIFICATE, WORK VISA, OF 1 YEAR OR MORE,,VOTER ID)

3.- COURRENT DRIVING LICENSE.

4.- FOR FOREIGN CITIZENS TOURIST VISA:
(FMT, FM2 OR FM3, ISSUED BY IMIGRATION OFFICE)

FOR MEXICANS LIVING ABROSD:
PERMIT ISSUED BY THE INMIGRATION OFFICE (FME)
