It is called “land of generals”. During the Mexican Revolution, 21 generals were natives of the region or lived there.
This city is located in the southern area of the State of Sonora next to Sinaloa.
The territory was originally inhabited by the Mayo Indians. In 1614 Jesuit missionaries Pedro Mendez and Diego de la Cruz and Captain Diego Martinez de Iturbide founded, alongside the Mayo River, the towns of la Mision del Mayo. One of them was Santa Cruz, called later as we know it today, Huatabampo.
More than seven kilometers of beautiful virgin beaches bathe the coastline of Huatabampo, beaches with fine sand, blue water and spectacular sun downs. A solid recommendation is to visit Huatabampito beach and to the Port of Yavaros. During the first months of the year whales coming from cold waters come to the Sea of Cortez to mate and reproduce. The coast line of Huatabampo offers this unique opportunity to whale watchers and photographers.
The city also offers several touristy spots as the Temple of Christ built back on the 1940’s and the museum and grave of the former president of Mexico General Alvaro Obregon.
Huatabampo main activities are agriculture and industrial fishing. Its name means “Puddle of the Willows” .
