Not too far from Kino Bay and a trip of 30 kilometers of dusty road, where the desert landscape floods the glance, you will find a very important destination in the State: Punta Chueca.
In front of Punta Chueca rises the majestic Tiburon Island, the largest island of the country. It extension is more than 1.200 km2 and it is separated from mainland by the Infiernillo Strait.
Ever since the prehispanic era this island was an important section of the Seri territory.
Today, Tiburon Island is a portion of reserve and refuge of migratory birds and wild animals ideal for ecotourism and natures lovers. The interest to conserve Tiburon Island refers to its present high degree of conservation, as well as its great wealth and diversity of plants and wild life.
Due to its size, topography, closeness to the continent and the permanent presence of water holes, it is an island with the largest diversity of plant and animal species in the Gulf of California.
In Tiburon island you will be able to find a large variety of resident and migratory bird species, wild animals such as desert big horn sheep and bura deer, as well as a large variety of reptiles an desert turtles.
There are no human settlements on the island because it is reserved for the preservation of diverse fauna species, as well as the typical flora and fauna of the region. Here, the white-tail sheep and the big horn sheep, among other animals, live simultaneously without being disturbed. Plant life includes numerous species such as coastal dune and thorny bush. The cardonas and sahuaros form very dense and prominent collections in the fresh water valley.
Besides admiring the astonishing beauty of the island, you may also be able to practice different sports, such as: diving, snorkeling, fishing and hiking. Since this is a protected area, access is not allowed, although you can get a permit to visit this natural sanctuary in Hermosillo, the State's capital. |
