Today, Magdalena de Kino traces its human origins back to at least 1540 -- or surely before, when it was known as a Buquibavic

According to the notes of Spanish expeditionary Francisco Vazquez de Coronado, Buquibavic had a population of over 300 in 1541 and he described it as a farming village that had not yet surpassed the stone age.

Reviewing this community’s history, the Jesuit missionary Eusebio Kino figures prominently. In June 1688 he founded the Santa Maria Magdalena de Buquivaba mission on the site inhabited by the Pima Indians. Soon after the evangelization, Kino taught the pimas how to construct adobe bricks, wood working and agricultural techniques to plant and cultivate fruit trees.

As a result of these historic passages, Magdalena residents have been forged by work, tenacity and love for their land. Given this, it is only natural that the community in general is open to receiving national and international tourism so that they may tell this story - a story that fills their own and visitors alike with emotion transforming itself day by day into a tourism destination.

While there are a large number of attractions, the most important are:
Saint Mary Magdalene Temple where the image of Saint Francisco Javier is venerated, a saint of great recognition in Sonora and in the neighboring state of Arizona.

Crypt of Father Kino, an honorable place that jealousy preserves the mortal remains of Jesuit Missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino, Pimeria Alta evangelist, who passed away in the year 1711 at the mission he himself founded and named.
