For those that like the adventure and excitement of visiting a unique land not too far from home, El Pinacate & Great Altar Desert are the perfect destination, ready to be visited by tourists in a whole different kind of vacation.

El Pinacate is a volcanic region located in the northwest of the State of Sonora. It has a surface of 714, 556, 5 has and it covers part of Rocky Point, San Luis Rio Colorado and Plutarco Elias Calles counties.

If we could observe it from the space, this region would be a dark spot surrounded by a great color zone next to a beautiful sea. Its very unique volcanic land is the result of hot magma building up pressure far below the earth's surface for almost 4 million years.

Its geography is similar to the moon craters and its unusual scenic beauty transformed this area into an opened sky laboratory of geology, attracting the attention of tourists and locals; also investigators from all over the world have come to study this magnificent landscape.

It is divided in two zones, the first one allows the investigation and traditional use of resources and recreation such camping and exploring, and the nucleon land, meant to preserve the process of the ecosystem.

This biological sanctuary considered through history like one of the most barren and inhospitable regions of the Sonora’s desert is one of the few archaeological & geological areas in the entire southwest that remains mostly untouched by human hands, nature or development.

It has been declared biosphere reserve because of the beautiful territory and the biological diversity of the place.

In El Pinacate you can also find evidence of the ancestors of Sonora, in places considered as sacred for its descendents, the pápago indians.

Overall, the Pinacate is an outstanding territory where you can feel the real life of the desert and relate to the mystic times when this land was first habited.

An amazing adventure, you wouldn’t like to miss while visiting the state.
