If you would like to know about Sonora’s culture and the archeological face of the State you must visit La Pintada. This area is located at 60 Km south Hermosillo with easy access from the border with United States, on highway Mexico 15.

La Pintada is a beautiful natural park which is part of one of the Cerro Prieto's Canyons, where you can admire rupestrian paintings of great artistic value.

Its principal attractive is based on more than 2000 cave paintings from the time the State was first occupied.

Nailed in the North end of a mountain area, La Pintada was the place where natives took refuge before the push of the Spanish arms. This archeological site is the result of the expression of local residents during the late historic period, who took advantage of the topographic characteristics and natural resources.

Many different animal and human shapes were artistically drawn in yellow, black, ochre, orange, or white, and its meaning is still being studied by experts who are also searching for strategies to avoid the further damage of these paintings.

Based on comparisons with other remnants and cultures, investigators suppose that those drawings are related to the “magic hunting”, or fertility rites and shamanistic forms of the 18th century.

Definitely this is one of a kind location, a living treasure of this mythical land called Sonora.
