If you want to get in contact with nature while observing the traditional life of Sonora’s people, the Rio Sonora Route has much to offer. You travel following the river and the towns that grew up alongside it while back in time. Each town has its unique charm where the habitants always seem to greet each visitor with a warm smile and words of welcome.
The Route goes or comes from Hermosillo to Cananea and there, by some highways or ways, the border can be crossed to give access to a tourist corridor with connection to the United States of North America. Great attractions of the Sonora river route are the natural wonders of the mountains and the trees that lie nourished by the river.
For the foreign visitor, these towns are of anthology, they become subject of admiration for those that never imagined finding this mixture of modernity and comfort framed by the colonial architecture, the country landscape, and the simple style of life.
The best time to visit the Sonora river route are between the months of October and November, then the bullfights, the cane milling, the harvest of red chile and peanut are at their best moment. Enjoy your trip town by town; take your time; drive with precaution; live and enjoy the nature.
Ures The route begins in Ures, founded in 1644 and capital of Sonora between 1838 and 1842, and between 1847 and 1879. In Ures you can visit “La Plaza de Armas” with its four 18th century bronze sculptures, San Miguel Mission and the church bearing the same name with its legendary mesquite stairway. In addition, you will see the majestic arch commemorating the Independence and the house where General Pesqueira used to live, The Folkloric Museum, and the old Flour Mill.
Baviacora Following the river to the north you will reach Baviacora; founded in 1639; the visitor can admire its park, colonial architecture and beautiful temples that must be visited. As in all the towns of the river route, there are countless places to relax and take a walk along the river, shaded by stands of walnuts, oak and aspen trees; you can also make arrangements to go hunting or visit the cinegetic ranches to admire the wild species of the place.
Aconchi Its main attractions are the thermal spring waters, which are a very popular natural “spa”; the San Pedro Church with its Franciscan architecture from the 18th century and its legendary Black Christ, and the nearly twenty wooden furniture factories, all of them with a great quality.
Huepac The old mission of San Lorenzo de Huepac founded in 1644 has attractions that include its 18th century temple and an ancient flour mill. The city also deserves mention for the portraits of famous leaders of Mexico’s movement for independence.
Banamichi Dating from 1639, with natural hot springs, a beautiful temple and a plaza with a kiosko bring to mind a feeling of colonial times. Among other interesting things there is an antique stone that was carved by Indians; researchers believe that the prints carved on this rock show an irrigation map.
Arizpe The natural topography of the area becomes more mountainous as we reach this town where the rocks, mountains, river and trees form a beautiful contrast of colors. Founded in 1646, the town has always played a crucial role in the history of the area, being the capital of the internal provinces in 1776. You might enjoy a tour to the Asunción church, built in the 17th century as the first cathedral of the Sonora’s diocese.
Bacoachi Framed by the Sierra Madre Occidental is a perfect place for hunting and ecotourism. Nearby is the important ecological reserve “Sierra de los Ajos, where one can view and interact with a variety of flora and fauna representative of the region, also the “Cerro Colorado Ranch” where ex-president Reagan spent his vacations, “Cerro “El Picacho”, and many cave-painting sites.
Cananea visitor may want to take a tour of the city before heading over to see the largest copper mine in Mexico, a marvel which has changed the topography of the area. In town visitor can view the catholic temple of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, as well as the Cananea jail museum and Mr. Green’s house.
