Today San Luis Rio Colorado is an important port of entry for the country and especially for the State of Sonora, but in the 15th and 16th centuries it was just a crossroads for the first Spanish settlers, who stopped by for a drink from the Colorado River’s fresh waters.
The founding of this town undoubtedly took place in the 20th century when Captain Carlos Calles established a military camp along the shore of the Colorado River.
