Traveling to the Sierra Alta of Sonora is a very healthy adventure for those who are ready to enter the eastern part of the State, where the idea that we have of a hot and desert territory changes completely. Up there, near the frontier with the State of Chihuahua, lies the highest point of the Sierra Madre Occidental with significant elevations and towns located up to 2400 meters above sea level. The northern part of the Sierra Alta includes all the way from Nacori Chico to Bavispe, approaching from the south via Huasabas and from the north via Agua Prieta.

From a tourist and development point of view, the Sierra Alta is located at the top of the map and on the horizon, as many other in Sonora; this region keeps unique secrets that are important for its promotion as a tourist destination and a productive region. The towns that compose the
Sierra Alta are great destinations because of their variety of attractions.

Moctezuma has numerous points of interest, including the serene beauty of its streets, its well- defined square imbued with warm, friendly atmosphere, and above all, La Candelaria Church, built in 1626.

Villa Hidalgo is a singular and peaceful town of the Sonora mountain range before ascending to the top of the Sierra Madre Occidental. It is surrounded by red and yellow mountains with sparse vegetation, but hiding wonderful archeological treasures of the Opata and Apaches indians that lived there. The Rio Bavispe is one of the main attractions, where you may go catfish and mojarra fishing.

Huasabas its name comes from the opata, referring to the site of the undertow, the garbage left by the river as it extends through the valley after running along gullies. This town always has a cheerful atmosphere, particularly in August, when people honor their patron Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion.

Granados the visitor will discover a peaceful and organized town; tourist attractions are limited to the fields, crops and farmer's life, which wake up very early in the morning to water the land, milk the cows and gather the cattle, returning at noon for business in town. Visitors may walk around the crops by the river, participate in the daily activities of the people in town, or hike at La Pirinola hill, located on the mountains to the east of town.

Huachinera has various attractive corners for the visitors, natural formations for the rappel lover, mountain biking and a great opportunity for those who enjoy bird watching. The high spots offer pine forests, while the plant life in the lowlands is basically poplars and oak-trees.

Bavispe the Bavispe river is without doubt the best place for recreation, with beautiful landscapes for camping and thick poplar and willow shades along the shore. Its major entertainments are to visit La Gotera, El Cañon del Pulpito, Los Pilares, Los Alisos, El Caracol and Las Labores, all of these are farmlands.

Nacori Chico natural beauty prevails in this town where time has stopped. It's a land of hunters and ranch settlements that have learned how to take profit of its biodiversity.
