If you are a history lover in need to explore, you will enjoy being part of the many tourists that visits one of the most important routes in Sonora. The mission’s route takes at least three days to be completed and will led you through the fascinating Altar desert. Visitors may follow the same trails that Father Kino blazed, visiting the sites of the missions he founded, including some that still stand today.

 Following some or the entire mission route will allow you to become acquainted with the towns and churches of the Pimeria Alta. Traveling this route will take you along roads that stand as a testimony to those who lost their lives searching deeper into then unknown territories; the tenancy of the people living in the region in their struggle to extract resources, riches and experience from the most inhospitable of landscapes becomes very clear in every spot you can visit.

Pitiquito this town was known as San Antonio de Pitiquito, from the pima word meaning between two rivers. The town is dominated by the San Diego Pitiquito church built in the XIX century.

Caborca located 15 Km from Pitiquito was founded in 1688 and moved to its current location in 1790. Among the attractions of this town, it should be mentioned the Nuestra Señora de la Purisima Concepcion de Caborca church, an architectural construction of majestic beauty.

Oquitoa the current mission temple was built at the beginnings of the XIX century. Despite its simplicity, the temple is a continuation of the mission architectural style witch had much influence in Sonora.

Tubutama founded in the XIX century, under the name of San Pedro de Tubutama. The San Pedro and San Pablo church is particularly outstanding; it seems to emerge from the desert, with great dignity across it.

Cocospera although now in ruins, the old temple still maintains the dignified air characteristic of human works. For many years it functioned as a bastion of the new faith and the relentless expansion of the conquest.

Magdalena de Kino it was originally named Santa Maria de Magdalena de Buquibaba. Here resides the Father Kino mausoleum, and the city has many other interesting spots making it a truly worth place to visit.

San Ignacio the mission of “San Ignacio de Caborica” was founded during the XVII century. Today, San Ignacio is a small town, and its past is reflected on its Franciscan temple and museum, which carry interesting pieces of religious art.   
    
Imuris distinguished by the abundance of ocotillo, a desert plant of great beauty. In the days of Father Kino was an important mission named "San Jose de los Himeros". Today the town has a charming parish. Some kilometers to the east is the Prey of Comaquito, with shaded areas and services for the tourist.
